Tikanga-maori homework tasks

Te reo: use it or lose it!

Task # 1

Find out the old place names.

Get a pretty good map of the area around where you live and find out, from wherever and whoever you can, the original te reo names for as many places on the map as you can. Get hold of, or visit the local marae. Ask local Kaumatua. Check in the local library or council office for information. Finally, check out the internet for information. Remake the map with only the te reo names on it. Submit this via email as a JPG (Jpeg) or a PDF or bring the real map in to school.

Task #2

Who was that?

What is the pre-european history for your town or neighbourhood? Research it. What was the name of the last ruling chief of this locality? What happened to him? Where did he go? Do any of his descendants still live in the area? Create an A4 folding timeline presentation about this person and his family.

Task # 3

What does that name mean?

Select up to 5 local placenames and use your detective skills to find out what the names actually mean and even more importantly, exactly why those places were given those precise names. Don't choose an easy one like "wai-iti," which means little water, because that's pretty self explanatory. Choose some names that are not quite so obvious. Create a small power point presentation for each name with a total file size no larger than 5 MB

Task # 4

Recreate a legend about a local landmark or feature, or about one a little further afield. Draw "scenes" and characters and then photograph them, using low-resolution and then join them together using MS Moviemaker, or similar, to make a video of the legend / story. Submit on disc.

Remember: No-one "has" to do these tasks.... But, if you do try some, try not to do any more than a couple each term, as the focus is on quality, not quantity. Also, make sure that you allow yourself plenty of time for the tasks that you do. Thats right. You decide when you do them, how you do them and how much effort you put in.

Even if you only do one task, it will be marked with all the rest and you will be recognised for the presentation, quality and effort.
